Derek Anderson – Making UK History Once Again

(In your face Louisville)

On February 7th, 2012, Derek Anderson made UK history once again, becoming the first ever former NBACat to follow us on twitter. In recognition of this amazing achievement, I have put together a list of things you should know, and a list of things you may not know about Derek Anderson to help get you reacquainted with the man that helped UK get championship #7.

1. Derek’s middle name is Lamont.
2. Derek originally committed to and played two seasons for Ohio State before coming to his senses and transferring to UK.
3. He played a major role in helping UK win the 1996 NCAA Championship.

5. In 1996, he was named 2nd Team All-SEC.
6. On February 7th, 2012, he began following @NBACats on twitter.
7. Derek was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky.
8. I once drove my little brother over to Derek Anderson’s house so he could hang out with Derek Jr.
9. Derek wore the number 23 at UK.
10. I should have done 9 things you should know.

1. Derek graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Pharmacy.
2. He was one of only 5 players selected by Michael Jordan to wear the Jordan Brand.
3. He has his own shoe, the DA Soldier
4. In high school, he averaged 24 points and almost 10 rebounds a game for Louisville Doss.
5. In 2006, the Houston Rockets traded Derek to the Miami Heat for former NBACat Gerald Fitch.
6. That same year, as a member of the Miami Heat, Derek and another former NBACat, Antoine Walker, won an NBA Championship.
7. Derek has two children.
8. He was drafted 13th overall in the 1997 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
9. According to Wikipedia, Derek was also the first player ever in the NBA to be waived using the “luxury tax amnesty clause”. Does he get royalty checks for that?
10. He played 10 seasons in the NBA, finishing with career averages of 12.1ppg, 3.4apg, and 3.2rpg.

Derek didn’t just go retire to some beach house after his NBA career ended in 2008. No, Derek has maintained an active presence in his community and has his hands full with a variety of business ventures and his foundation. In 1998, he started the Derek Anderson Foundation, which is an amazing organization whose mission is “assisting abused, battered women and children, as well as feeding and supplying underprivileged children who are without guidance”. Now let’s all join together and give a special thanks to Derek for following us on twitter and make sure you go support our favorite former NBACat, by checking out his foundation. Here are some highlights of Derek you can watch while you wait for tonight’s NBACats Live Gamecast Links, enjoy.
