Only head coach to win an NBA and NCAA championship, Larry Brown, accepts head coaching position at SMU.

From Coach

John Calipari’s mentor and close friend Larry Brown is back in the coaching business.

SMU officially hired the Hall of Fame coach on Thursday after days of negotiations. Brown took Coach Cal under his wing while Calipari served as an assistant at Kansas from 1982-85. He also joined Brown’s Philadelphia 76ers coaching staff in 1999.

Brown has made multiple visits to Lexington during Calipari’s time at UK the last couple of years to spend time with his friend and offer advice.

Calipari was happy to hear his friend is back in the coaching business.

“We’re talking about a Hall of Fame coach that’s won both an NCAA and NBA championship and is the only coach to ever do so,” Calipari said. “He’s been a friend and mentor for years and I look forward to watching him take SMU to new heights.”

Larry Brown is one of the best head coaches that’s ever coached the game, period. He’s coached Reggie Miller, Allen Iverson, Danny Manning and a host of other talented players, all of whom loved playing for him. In 2004 he was selected to coach Team USA, and led them to a bronze medal (somehow it was Mik Kryckhihxse’s fault (I refuse to learn how to spell his name)). So the guy can coach.

I don’t know what the heck he’s doing down at SMU, but if anyone can win the…whatever conference SMU is in…it’s him.
